Project title: DNA origami-templated optical metasurfaces
Description:
DNA origami is a technique for creating nanoscale structures by folding a long strand of DNA into a desired shape using short "staple" strands. By carefully designing the sequence of these staple strands, the DNA molecule can be folded into any desired two- or three-dimensional shape. The resulting structures can be used for the fabrication of optical devices, such as optical metasurfaces.
The aim of our internship program at the Center for Engineering Physics is to provide students with hands-on experience in the DNA origami technique. During the internship, students will:
➔ Produce scaffold DNA with the help of bacteria and bacteriophages.
➔ Design a DNA origami structure suitable for applications in optical metasurfaces using computer-aided design tools.
➔ Manufacture a pre-designed structure in our new laboratory.
➔ Analyze the fabricated structure using electron microscopy or atomic force microscopy.
Participants will gain valuable skills in designing, modeling, and fabricating DNA origami, as well as general laboratory work in a chemical and biological lab, and advanced imaging techniques.
Upon completion of the internship, students who pursue a graduate program will have the opportunity to further advance their expertise, potentially developing innovative techniques for deposition of DNA origami structures on lithographically patterned surfaces. They will also have a unique opportunity to work in the Skoltech Cleanroom.
Ideal candidates should have a background in Physics, Optics, or Molecular Biology, with a strong interest in DNA nanotechnology and bioengineering. Join us and contribute to the art of designing DNA strands that self-assemble into 3D structures!
Candidates requirements:
➔ Experience with purification and handling of DNA is desirable
➔ Experience with colloidal nanoparticles is desirable
➔ Experience with general laboratory work in a chemical or biological lab is desirable
➔ High proficiency skills in English (spoken and written)
